“It was probably my most difficult Friday in Monaco in my 10 years of racing.” That’s how strong Carlos Sainz was at the end of Free Practice 2 of the Monaco GP this Friday, where he was 6th, 0.6 behind Leclerc’s best time on the soft, and worse than the previous time set on the medium.
As his teammate Charles flew by with his Ferrari, the Spaniard found it more difficult to extract the full potential of the medium and soft tires in one lap, but he had good race pace. But in Monaco, where it is very difficult to overtake, the speed of the race takes a backseat. What matters here is pure speed in a lap and achieving a good qualification. Pole is more than half a win away and Carlos will have to find answers for first place this Saturday in a ‘qualy’ that looks to be exciting with a very tight and even fight for pole.
“I had a lot of problems with the setup and feeling in the car to get the most out of the medium and soft tires in one lap. And suddenly in the long run (long run and race pace. ) I started going very fast and in fact he had a very good race pace that makes me think that there are answers that we need to understand the speed and now we need to find the reason,” said the Spaniard in Monaco.
“I certainly suffered in one lap today. I didn’t get the maximum performance from the medium and soft tires in one lap. And that’s the reason. We have to understand it so that hopefully this Saturday we can find a lot of answers , ” he added.
“We got a bit lost with some changes (in the settings) at the start of FP2 and we took a step back throughout FP2. Hopefully tomorrow will be better, but it’s not the perfect start to the weekend. Hopefully it will be better Saturday.”
“Monaco is one of my strongest circuits. There is something there that we must understand to put everything together for tomorrow,” he concluded, hoping to be there, fighting for everything on the iconic circuit of the streets of the Principality.
