“Obviously, I’m not entirely happy, because I would prefer pole, but Charles (Leclerc) deserved it,” said Carlos Sainz at the end of the Formula 1 Monaco GP qualifying session, after finishing third behind PIastri (2nd) and Leclerc (1st). Because it is so difficult to overcome, Carlos is not thinking about the victory but the victory of the team and his teammate, recognizing that Leclerc, after so much bad luck in his home race, deserves to win this event.
The Madrid driver suffered a lot over the weekend to tame a nervous Ferrari where he couldn’t find the right settings on Friday. He changed ground this Saturday and in FP3 he was still 6 tenths behind his teammate. And finally, he was able to improve when he played, in a classification that was very important in Monaco. It happened to be two tenths away in a weekend where I had no confidence.
He made sure he had to leave more margin than usual and was pleased to save the weekend with a third place in qualifying which could have put him on the podium.
“Yesterday we were better for a long time and we will try everything, but the priority is to win the race with Charles,” expressed, an idea he reiterated at a subsequent press conference.
“Well, the weekend, in general, was a bit difficult for me at the beginning and I didn’t have the confidence that I usually have in Monaco. And yes, I’m not at my best level yet. But I managed to take a step forward in qualifying, even though it was late. “Charles took pole and the team is now in a good position to win the race with him tomorrow.”he added.
Improvement IN QUALY
“Fortunately I made a step forward in qualifying, unfortunately it was a little too late. Charles took pole and I’m glad to see the team in a good position to win the race with Charles tomorrow. It’s a shame we didn’t get the most out of the car here, at a track where qualifying is so important.”
YOUR PROBLEMS AT THE WEEKEND
“I have no confidence. On this track you need a lot of commitment and on another track that won’t be key, maybe half a tenth, but here it means losing three tenths. Fortunately, I improved in qualifying, but I suffered a lot throughout the weekend and that’s something new for me in Monaco because I’m usually comfortable here. “We need to study the reasons.”
“During the free practice, I had many moments (scares) and when you have too many scares here and there, approaching the wall or touching the protections and you are too close to it, you lose confidence. You lose the back of the car in places where you don’t expect it “I lost it and I couldn’t get as close to the walls as I wanted because I had to leave some rooms. It wasn’t perfect, but we managed to save it.”
SUCCESS, FOR CHARLES
“Now, let’s see what we can do in the beginning or what we can do strategically to achieve success with Charles. “He was driving incredibly well all weekend.”
“Gain? In a normal race it is impossible. We will try to see what we can do with both cars to try to win with Charles. This is Monaco, anything can happen, but if I win it will be because there something strange will happen to Charles with strategies or safety cars. Obviously I want to win but Charles deserves to win in Monaco and how fast he has been this weekend Charles.”
