The American Peyton Stearns won the first title of his career by winning the Rabat tournament after defeating the Egyptian Mayar Sherif in the final, with authority, 6-2 and 6-1, in 72 minutes of play.
The 22-year-old North American, 81st in the world, surpassed the African, best placed in the ranking (66), the executioner of the Spanish Sara Sorribes, who started as the third seed.
Stearn had an uphill journey in the draw and narrowly lost in the quarterfinals, against Italian Lucia Bronzetti, the reigning champion. But the American overcame two match points, surviving and qualifying for the semifinals, where she faced Bulgarian Viktoriya Tomova in a match she also fought and won after three and a quarter hours.
