In a marathon day, in which he first had to solve the semifinal postponed on Friday against the Italian Flavio Cobolli, with two match points, and in which he defeated the Czech Tomas Machac, the Norwegian Casper Ruud has again achieved the Geneva tournament title, as in 2021 and 2022.
Ruud won the final against Machac, Novak Djokovic’s executioner, 7-5 6-3, in one hour and 48 minutes. The world number seven, who has already beaten the Czech at the Australian Open in 2023, in the only match between the two, completed a successful Saturday that led to his second title of 2024 after that in Barcelona and his twelfth career.
The player from Oslo, one of the candidates for victory at Roland Garros, had more difficulty in the semifinal he had to play in the morning against Coboli. The Norwegian, finalist at three Grand Slams – two at Roland Garros and one at the United States Open, all without success – had to save two match points and return.
In two hours he won the semifinal match against Cobolli (1-6, 6-1 and 7-6(4)) to reach his fifth final of the season. He won in Barcelona and lost the 1,000 Masters in Monte Carlo, Acapulco and Los Cabos.
Ruud won for the third time in Geneva and now has his sights set on Roland Garros.
