Athletic’s typical eleven at the end of the season just ended shows many similarities with the previous campaign, when Valverde began his third spell in charge of Bilbao’s first team. In the 2022-23 campaign there were some significant changes, changes which continued in 2023-24.
At the defensive level, both Unai Simón, De Marcos and Yuri are untouchable when in the right physical condition. In the central axis, however, there was a change from the Yeray-Iñigo Martínez tandem to Vivian-Paredes. These latter two will have to remain steady at the back for several days due to Yeray’s absence due to injury.
There was also a mutation in the double pivot. Regulars Dani García and Vesga gave way to the recovered Galarreta and newcomer Beñat Prados. Ander Herrera also had his moments connecting with some of his four former teammates.
Where there was least doubt throughout the campaign was from the center of the field forward. Valverde made it clear from the second day of the League, when the lions won 0-2 against Osasuna. Since then, the commitment to Williams as a band with Sancet and Guruzeta at the center has been constantly repeated that Berenguer is always ready and willing to respond to any emergency.
