The Riojan boxer Gazi Jalidov lost his pre-Olympic quarterfinal match which was held in Bangkok (Thailand) and concluded with the goal of achieving a place for the Paris Games.
Jalidov, an Olympic diploma in Tokyo and number three in the world ranking of his weight, 80 kilograms, was one of the favorites to achieve an Olympic place, but he lost on points to Dominican Cristina Javier Pinales.
The Riojan had a great fight against a very technical boxer who was superior to him in size; The first two rounds were tight, with the Spaniard finding his opponent but using his head, to avoid being caught on the counter.
From the third round onwards, Jalidov became more offensive than his rival, but the judges appreciated the Dominican technique more than the Spaniard’s fighting style and decided the fight against the native of Rioja.
Jalidov’s coach, José Ignacio Barruetabeña, in statements to EFE, regretted the decisions of the judges “that’s embarrassing” because “since the third round the Dominican avoided the fight all the time, but they still gave him a point.”
He stressed that “it’s a shame that these situations happen in amateur boxing, with extra-sports things behind the judges’ votes, because they play with men’s dreams and in all the work in for four years.”
Jalidov, who will return to Spain in the coming days is “destroyed”, the coach assumed, especially because he decided to return to the amateur field “for this excitement” after making his professional debut “and I think the this phase is over, it’s time to think about another step forward,” the coach thought.
