The English goalkeeper Mary Earps will not be available for the qualifying match for European Cup women’s 2025 against France on Tuesday after picking up a minor hip injury early in the Lionesses’ 2-1 loss to the same opponents on Friday. The Manchester United player went down in pain in the eighth minute and was replaced by Hannah Hampton. The Earps later left St. James’ Park on crutches.
The defeat which England coach Sarina Wiegman called “absolutely frustrating” left the reigning European champions third in their group and in danger of missing out on an automatic place at next year’s tournament in Switzerland. France lead Group A3 with nine points after three games, while England and Sweden have four each, with the Swedes leading on goal difference. Ireland last, no points.
The top two teams in each group will advance automatically, while the remaining seven spots will be decided in two playoff rounds later this year. Sweden will host Ireland on Tuesday.
Birmingham City’s Lucy Thomas has replaced Earps in England’s 23-man squad for the trip to Saint-Etienne on Tuesday. The Lionesses will host Ireland on July 12 and take on Sweden four days later in their final group match.
