The technician England, Gareth Southgateis still weighing up attacking options for his Euro 2024 squad and says that while Jack Grealish has not played as well as he would have liked this season for Manchester City, he is still in the race to make it.
Marcus Rashford has been left out of the provisional 33-man squad for Germany and there has been talk that Grealish could be the next big name dropped, with Southgate conditional on reducing the squad to 26 players by June 7.
Grealish has played just 20 Premier League games for Manchester City this season, scoring three goals and didn’t even play in the FA Cup final defeat to Manchester United last month.
Asked if Grealish was in danger of being ruled out of the Euros, Southgate said: “I don’t think we are finalizing that yet. What we know is where we want to be. I haven’t spoken to him specifically about the Euros but he’s been brilliant and he loves it.”
The coach admitted that “he hasn’t played much this season. I’m sure he wants to be different, but we know the qualities he can bring. He’s a player we enjoy.”
Southgate added that there is still time for players to change their minds ahead of this week’s friendlies against Bosnia and Herzegovina and Iceland. James Maddison, Eberechi Eze, Cole Palmer and Jarrod Bowen are pushing for a place in the team and Southgate said he has not yet decided how many attacking players he will need.
England host Bosnia in St. James’ Park this Monday and Iceland at Wembley on Friday before opening their Euro 2024 campaign on June 16 against Serbia in Group C.
