The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya is embarking on an ambitious transformation project to position itself as the most modern permanent circuit in Europe. With an investment plan of 50 million euros until 2026, the Circuit accelerates its modernization by promoting a more sustainable, innovative, industrial and digital model, with the aim of becoming a key infrastructure for the country.
The project is looking for the Montmeló facility to generate sources of income through new lines of business and increase its synergies with the industry, especially related to green mobility.
Much of the infrastructure improvement work is already visible, such as the comprehensive renovation of the control tower, the briefing room, the press room, the stewards and timing offices, and the hospitality areas. New offices and rooms were also created to hold business and social events and meetings. In addition, the terrace of the pit building was modified with the construction of a new roof.
Maintenance reference
The new plan aims to make the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya a leader in environmental commitment and the changes that this type of facilities must undertake in the face of the climate emergency. Currently, the Circuit is already a world reference for its commitment to sustainability and respect for its environment, but the goal is more.
In this context, last October the Circuit inaugurated the largest public self-consumption photovoltaic installation in Catalonia. Since then it has a total of 1,239 solar panels which generate 33% of the energy currently consumed by the Circuit.
New income
In addition to environmental sustainability, the plan also seeks diversification to generate new revenue. Its aim is to improve the direct development of economic resources and become more efficient thanks to digitalization. More than 4,675 meters of track, the Circuit has 25 hectares of green areas that make it possible to organize unique events linked to the world of entertainment and healthy leisure.
The organization’s capacity and experience in holding mass events is an added value of Circuit when it comes to diversifying its business lines throughout the year.
Also, the Circuit will be a tool to boost industrial and technological innovation in Catalonia, especially that related to green mobility and the automotive industry, which is facing the challenge of decarbonizing its production. A tool aligned with the Government’s goal of remaking Catalonia.
The Rooftop is born, the new icon of the Circuit
Among the new features for 2024, the creation of the Rooftop, a walkway that connects the paddock to the Stadium area, stands out. This space, together with the cover of the Main Grandstand (emblem of the Catalan layout), will become a new iconic element of the Circuit and will offer an unprecedented perspective of the track. The Rooftop is set to debut during the Spanish Formula 1 Grand Prix, which will be held from June 21 to 23.
