The Brazilian Olympic medalist Laura Pigossi, the Spaniard Jessica Bouzas and the number 1 of the tournament, the Bulgarian Vicktoriya Tomova, advanced to the quarterfinals of the BBVA Open Internacional de Valencia while Mexican Renata Zarazúa was eliminated against Iryna Shymanovich.
Pigossi, who played his match on Thursday after being suspended the previous day due to rain, completed a tight match, the longest of this edition with 3 hours 56 minutes, in which he saved five match points to beat Slovakian Rebecca Skramkova by a score of 7-6(5), 6-7(5) and 7-6(10).
Spaniards Jessica Bouzas and Marina Bassols also advanced to the quarterfinals after defeating Polona Hercog (6-1 and 6-2) and Seone Méndez (6-0 and 6-3), respectively, and were beaten by Bulgarian Tomova Oksana Selekhmeteva 7-5, 2-6 and 6-1. However, Shymanovich defeated Zarazúa (6-4 and 6-2).
American Ann Li defeated one of the favorites, Italian Martina Trevisan (2-6, 6-3 and 6-3), and Darja Semenistaja defeated Irina Begu (3-6, 6-3 and 6 -4).
In doubles, Spanish Yvonne Cavalle-Reimers and Leyre Romero advanced to the semifinals with a doubles 6-4 against Alena Fomina-Klotz and Vivian Heisen while Katarzyna Piter and Fanny Stollar did the same against Varvara Lepchenko and Katarina Zavatska 6-3 and 6-2.
In the semifinals, the Spanish women will face the Mexican Renata Zarazúa and the Italian Angelica Moratelli while Piter and Stollar will face the winning couple in the match between Laura Pigossi and Sabrina Santamaría and the Spanish Charo Esquiva and Ángela Fita.
