In between mythical port of the Tour de France and cycling ranks first for beauty, toughness and history. Col du Galibierstar of this Tuesday’s fourth episode of 111th edition of the Tour139.6 kilometers, with two 2nd category ports before facing the climbing the Galibier.
This Tuesday will be the 64th time the Tour peloton will tackle it, and like most of them, the day will not end on a high, it has only been done once, and it ends after a dizzying descent into Valloire.
Every year, the Tour de France classifying a summit as Souvenir Henri Desgrange in honor of its creator, Henri Desgrange, who created the Tour de France in 1903 and died in 1940. Since Desgrange has a monument to his memory erected at the top of Col du Galibier, The alpine colossus was chosen whenever it was on the route. In the absence of the Galibier, the highest peak with respect to sea level was usually chosen, and on two occasions it was awarded the ascent to Col d’Aubisque in 2002 and Port de Pailhères in 2007.
The historical ‘top scorers’ of this particular award are Richard Virenque and Nairo Quintana, with three each. A step awarded 5,000 euros.
