Yesterday marked 31 years since the Madimak massacre, one of the worst massacres against the Alevi community in Turkey: 35 people, mostly artists and intellectuals, were burned alive in the hotel where they were staying while participating in a cultural festival. And yesterday Merih Demiralsparked controversy with his celebration of one of the goals he scored against Austria in the round of 16 of the Euro Cup.
Critical voices soon came. The victims of that massacre exploded on social media: “I cannot and will not remain silent about this. For years I have received death threats from supporters of the #GrauenWölfe, one of the largest far-right groups .The fact that Merih Demiral is giving the far right a wolf salute is a mockery of the victims.
“Their deadly ideology is valued and their activities are allowed. #UEFA must draw conclusions and Germany must finally impose a ban instead of writing to Erdoğan!” And the third: “It propagates the Turks as a superior race that must exterminate all “inferior people” (Kurds, Jews, Christians, Armenians, Alevis… etc.). It can be compared to Hitler’s tribute, because ” The Gray Wolves see Hitler as one of their role models in the ideology of race and extermination. This should lead to Demiral being banned for #EURO2024.
“Today is #Madimak memorial day. The fact that Merih Demiral is giving the far right wolf salute is not only pure contempt for humanity, but a disgusting mockery of the victims of #MADIMAK. UEFA needs to respond to this with cruel consequences: a disgrace!” said one.
