This Wednesday we learned that UEFA opens an investigation into the Turkish player Medih Demiral after his reaction last night after the victory over Austria (2-1). The defender raised his arms to celebrate one of his goals, made into a sign by the ‘Gray Wolves’, a Turkish far-right group, with his hands. The image was widely shared on social networks.
UEFA appointed an “ethics and discipline investigator” to follow the case. Germany’s own interior minister, Nancy Facer, made it clear to her networks that “the symbol of the Turkish extreme right has no place in our stadiums.”
The UEFA Disciplinary Code makes it clear in its article 11 regarding the general principles of conduct that any “use of sporting events for non-sporting events” is absolutely prohibited.
Article 14 of the same Code regarding racism or discriminatory behavior includes the possibility of up to ten penalties in cases where there is an insult to the human rights of a person or group of people, regardless of their skin color, religion, orientation sexual etc … Also included in Article 15 as a reason for the punishment of “unsporting behavior” which requires at least one match in addition to the corresponding financial fine.
