American Hayden Springer He finished Thursday’s 14th round in 60 strokes at History of the PGA Tourjoining a rapidly expanding list with an eagle-birdie finish in the John Deere Classic of Silvis (Illinois) for a total of 59, 12 under par.
All he managed was a two-stroke lead over Finland’s Sami Valimaki at a rain-softened TPC Deere Run. Only 13 players in the field of 156 entries were over par.
Springer shot a 27 on the front nine and tried to ward off thoughts of a 59 or better. He then made five consecutive pars and thought the opportunity was gone until he bogeyed for eagle on the par-5 17th. He needed a birdie for golf’s magic number, and he made it from 13 feet on the 18th.
“I’m speechless about what I’ve done,” Springer said. “I feel like it’s one of the rare things in golf, so to have that opportunity and do it, it feels very special.”
The PGA Tour record is Jim Furyk’s 58 at the Travelers Championship in 2016. Furyk is also among 13 players with 59. Any result that starts with 5 is still special, though it’s not as rare as it used to be.
Cameron Young also shot a 59 at the Travelers Championship and it was the eighth time a player has shot a round under 60 on circuits around the world.
