How many times have retired boxers returned to the ring to put on exhibitions just to fill their pockets? Many, always have great expectations. But this time, Manny Pacquiao might be thinking bigger. The Pinoy, known as Pac-Man and due to his status as the only boxer capable of being a champion in up to 8 different weight categories, wants to return to the ring legally, without exhibitions : he wants to do this by competing for the Council welterweight title in the World Boxing Championship (WBC) against Mario Barrios.
This was said by some international media and ‘ESPN’ did not hesitate to echo this news. According to the aforementioned media, Manny Pacquiao is negotiating to compete for the WBC welterweight title and the president of the said organization has neither confirmed nor denied the negotiations, even encouraging said option. “I really like the idea… it would be sensational,” said Mauricio Sulaimán, president of the WBC, leaving the doors completely open to this possibility.
However, despite the fact that Manny Pacquiao is considered one of the best boxers in history and his return will generate a lot of expectations, there are doubts about the state of form he can show when he returns to fight at 45 years old.
It will be remembered that the Fight of the Century between Pacquiao-Maywather in 2015, with Pacquiao at the age of 36, failed due to its low level. Of course, Pacquiao showed a great level, winning against other rivals. In 2021 he returned to the ring after a two-year absence against Yordenis Ugás and in that fight, aged 42, his skills were clearly not the same and that age had affected his boxing. It will be necessary then, if his return at the age of 46 is confirmed, to what degree he can do it against a Mario Barrios in his youth, who also beat Yordenis Ugás without thinking, who beat Pacquiao in 2021 .
