Ronald Koeman, Netherlands coach, could not hide his disappointment after the cruel defeat against England in the semifinals of the Euro Cup. Watkins’ goal in stoppage time destroyed Oranje’s dream and put Southgate’s side in the grand final in Berlin against Spain.
“We did everything we could but unfortunately it wasn’t possible. I’m disappointed because it’s a semi-final, but as painful as it is, we had a great tournament. We can’t blame ourselves. I’m proud of how we worked, we kept the faith and we played better and better,” explained the former Barcelona coach.
“I feel like in the last 20 or 25 minutes we were fresher, but they scored a great goal and that’s football. Maybe we deserved extra time, but it is what it is. We can be proud of those player and the team because we had a good tournament,” added Koeman.
Regarding the match, the ‘Oranje’ coach acknowledged his team’s difficulty in the first half. “England created problems in our midfield in the first half; we couldn’t control how they played between the lines with Bellingham and Foden. Then we added another in midfield and it was more even,” said he.
