“Today is a special day for me, because I announce my retirement from tennis,” Puig, 28, said in an ESPN interview that he downloaded in a video on his Instagram account.
Puig explained that he would retire because of problems he had experienced with his right shoulder over the past three years where he had to undergo four surgeries, which, however, did not help him to fully recover.
Puig admitted that the decision to retire was “very difficult”, because over the past two years he has tried to return to his “best level” doing “everything possible”, including surgery and rehabilitation.
“But I got to the point where my body never told me,” added Puig, the surprisingly Olympic champion at the 2016 Rio Games.
“I had to make this strong decision to get away from the tennis courts. I knew a good future awaited me, but this time it wasn’t as a professional tennis player,” he said.
Puig left tennis with a balance of 303 wins and 215 losses on the ATP circuit, where he won another title in addition to his Olympic gold. (Strasbourg’2014) and reached world number 27 as the best ranking of his career.
