2012 for many was one of the best times in history. The fight for the title ended in Fernando Alonso remains on the brink of achieving a miracle in Brazil and taking the title from Sebastian Vettel with a Ferrari significantly inferior to Red Bull. But, undoubtedly, that year is remembered for the highest parity there was, especially in the first half of the campaign. The best proof of this is that eight different drivers won, something that has not been equaled since. Although in 2024 it will be achieved when no one has given a cent for it.
In that amazing 2012, in the first seven races of the year there were seven different winnerss (Button, Alonso, Rosberg, Vettel, Hamilton, Webber and Hamilton). At the end of the year Raikkonen is added to the list.
Well, in 2024 there are already seven of the 13 races to be held. The winners are Verstappenin seven cases, the other six were distributed in between Sainz, Leclerc, Norris, Russell, Hamilton and Piastri. The top teams progress in a way that depends on the circuit, Mercedes or Ferrari being the strongest, while Red Bull and McLaren are the most consistent at the top.
This parity does not cease to shock considering that in the first six races of the season, five fell at the hands of Verstappen. And if we go back, from the 2022 Brazilian GP to this year’s Australian GP, only a single victory has escaped Red Bull. Those from Milton Keynes gave a victory of 24. Crazy.
However, in a year where evolutions are the key, both Ferrari, Mercedes and especially McLaren have recovered faster than expected and Verstappen’s complaints in Hungary show the nervousness being experienced.
Waiting for Pérez
The top four teams have already tasted what it means to win. It’s definitely Red Bull that hasn’t done anything yet with its two drivers. Checo Pérez got his renewal for two years but the performance was more difficult than you expect. He should improve no matter what to return RB20 to the most common positions, that is, leading.
If you want to achieve eight victories, something complicated, the best hope a priori remains Mexican. Red Bull continues to be one of the best on the grid. Seeing an ‘outsider’ like an Aston Martin seems more complicated this year because the difference between the top four teams is important.
