The Generalitat puts pressure on the government to support only Catalan Olympic candidacy

The government believes an agreement with Aragón is no longer viable

Neither 50% nor in conjunction with the government of Aragon. The Catalan government closed the door on Wednesday to hand in hand with Aragon to choose the Olympic venue and pressured the central executive and the COE to support an exclusively Catalan candidacy. The Minister of the Presidency of the Generalitat, Laura Vilagrà, defended Catalunya’s only candidacy on Catalunya Ràdio, an approach that has already been handed over to the Spanish Olympic Committee.

From day one, the COE has opted for a joint project between Catalonia and Aragon. There was a technical agreement on the division of the halls, but the Executive of Aragon later dropped it. The original project was a joint team of Catalonia, Aragon and the COE, but the Aragon government has not considered the distribution of the sites fair and Spain’s candidacy for 2030 is currently in the air.

The government bluntly stated that “the Olympics are not off track because one of the parties is Catalonia”. And in light of speculation that the COE could give up its headquarters by 2030, the Generalitat proposes that “the option to submit a Catalan candidacy is appreciated, as the other option has had no way out for the time being. ”

“We have a PSC minister, Minister Iceta, and I believe he will not miss the opportunity for Olympic options,” Vilagrà insisted. In his opinion, the possibility of reaching an agreement with Aragón is unachievable. “It is at a point where there is no going back, and not because the government has not made any effort on the technical part, but clearly, and the president of the COE has explained it, because the government of Aragon has set political criteria and anti-catalanism has made a resurgence,” he concluded. After the ‘Pegasus case’ and the controversy over infrastructure investment in Catalonia, the Olympics are presented as the next battle between the government and the government if the project does not go ahead.

Aragon’s president, Javier Lambán, and the PSC’s first secretary, Salvador Illa, held a meeting in Zaragoza on Tuesday to discuss the candidacy for the Winter Olympics. Lambán argues that Aragón is harmed in the division of sites and disciplines defended by the COE and signed by the Generalitat. “The Aragonese Pyrenees are no worse in terms of stations than the Catalan ones, it is at least the same and certainly better, therefore accepting discriminatory treatment is unacceptable,” he said days ago in Ser.
