The American Sebastian Korda and the Australian Alexei Popyrin qualified this Sunday for the second semi-final of the ATP Masters 1,000 in Canada, which will take place in Montreal, after eliminating two of the favorites: the German Alexander Zverev and the Polish which is Hubert Hurkacz.
Korda, world number 18 and winner of last week’s ATP 500 in Washington, defeated German Alexander Zverev (n.4) in their quarterfinal match 7-6(5), 1-6 and 6-4 in over 2 hour and 18 minutes of play.
Zverev is the highest-ranked ATP tennis player left out of the tournament after Saturday’s elimination in the quarterfinals of Italian Jannik Sinner, world number 1 and reigning champion in Montreal, who fell to Russian Andrey Rublev, 6-3, 1. -6 and 6-2.
Popyrin (n.62), for his part, eliminated Polish Hubert Hurkacz (n.6) 3-6, 7-6(5) and 7-5 in over 2 hours and 47 minutes. Hurkacz just played in his round of 32 and round of 16 ties yesterday, both in long three-set matches.
The semi-final between Korda and Popyrin is scheduled to take place this Sunday evening. The other semifinal will also be played, between the Russian Andrey Rublev (n.8) and the Italian Matteo Arnaldi (n.46).
The Montreal organization was forced to schedule several rounds on the same day to finish the tournament on time after all of Friday and part of Thursday were suspended due to rain.
The final is scheduled for tomorrow, Monday, a day later than usual, a decision made to give tennis players competing in the Olympic Games room to get to Canada.
