Running+alcohol: What can go wrong?

Date:

You need to hydrate. It is very important that the runner participating in a race follows the rules of hydration so that he does not pass out during the competition. Although, perhaps, in these strange races, by swallowing too much you can also end up in the ditch.

Beer Mile

In the late 80s and early 90s, some university students from USA and Canadathey adopt the healthy habit of having fun doing sports. But since the competition, the victory and the glory were not enough, they chose to make it more difficult and added to the one mile race on an athletics track (1,609 km – 4 laps) the obligation to drink beer at the start of the race at each turn .

The organization gives the beers a registration fee, which is 355 ml and has an alcohol percentage of at least 5%. The area where the competitor must drink the beer is 9 meters and they can do it by walking or running by opening the can or bottle themselves. Those who could not hold and were forced to vomit were punished with an extra lap.

The men’s record is held by a Canadian Corey Bellemore who in 2021 won his third title at Beer Mile World Classic in Leigh (England) with a time of 4:28:10 drinking four bottles Flying Monkeys Beer Mile Lager (beer brewed especially for racing) in seven seconds while for women Shelby Houlihan with a time of 5:43.81 drinking four bottled beers Budweiser. Prizes for winning it amount to 2,300 euros while other smaller prizes are distributed.

Kastenlauf (Running with boxes)

Life is a balance. You shouldn’t have to choose between running or drinking. Or run first and then drink. Because first drinking and then running runs the risk of not finishing the competition. Literally,’Kastenlauf‘ means ‘Run with boxes’ and that’s what it’s about: a race where you carry a box of beer that you have to consume until you reach the finish line.

As the meters travel, the box weighs less but it is harder for the head to know the speed to impose to win. This is a competition that (of course!) will be held in the German-speaking European region of Switzerland, Austria and on Germany properly. It consists of teams of at least two people carrying a box with beers to finish when they reach the finish line. Distances vary depending on the organization and stamina of the participants and can be between 5 and 12 kilometers.

Médoc Marathon

Every September since 1985 it is celebrated, among the vineyards that over the years have offered the best wines in the region of Medocalmost Bordeauxa unique and jam-packed marathon.

The regulation 42 km is run, there are doctors, paramedics and masseurs (more than in a normal marathon), chemical toilets (very necessary), checkpoints (less breathalyzers) and refreshment shops. The latter is essential if you want to enjoy the experience of tasting 23 different wines along the way and other stops offering local products such as foie gras, cheese, oysters, ice cream and in some edition, even pieces of entrecôtes cooked to order. ember

Around kilometer 5 there is the first wine tasting; at number 9, cheeses; at 11, glass of wine; at 15, toast with foie gras; on the 19th, wine; on the 21st another glass of wine; on the 23rd, oysters and others, alternating the route, the runners who started out anxious and happy, ended up happy and hardly recognized if the wine they drank was a Cabernet Sauvignon yes Malbec. Of the 9,000 registered, some say that the famous wall between kilometers 25 and 30 is a small thing and that it is easier to overcome.
