Lamecha Girma, who had to be taken off a stretcher in the final of the 3,000 hurdles due to a fall where he hit his head, is “in good condition” after spending the night in a Paris hospital, according to the African nation’s national federation.
The Ethiopian suffered a racing accident on the last lap of the course. He fell to the ground, hitting his head on the track and had to be evacuated on a stretcher by the stadium’s emergency services, who helped him regain consciousness.
The Ethiopian athlete was transferred to Pitié Salpêtrière hospitalwhere he spent the night under observation.
“After his fall in the 3,000 hurdles race, Lamecha Girma received immediate attention from the stadium’s medical teams. Our thoughts are with him and we send him our best wishes for a speedy recovery. Paris 2024 is in close contact with the National Olympic Committee of Ethiopia to stay informed about its status,” the Paris 2024 Organizing Committee said in a statement.
