The British Sebastian Coepresident of World Athletics, left the door open this Sunday to a Possible candidacy to lead the International Olympic Committee (IOC)at least “study” the option, once the German Thomas Bach announced that he will not pursue a new mandate after 2025.
Bach, president of the IOC since 2013, will not continue to lead the entity when his mandate ends in 2025 and, therefore, will have to be replaced, despite the fact that several committee members have asked him to change the rules so he can extend his time at the helm of world sport’s governing body.
Coe, double Olympic 1,500 meters champion, president of the London 2012 Olympic Games Organizing Committee and current president of World Athletics, could be one of the candidates.
“I’ve always made it clear that if there was an opportunity, I would obviously think about it seriously. I have been involved in the Olympic movement most of my life. “I led an Olympic Games from its presentation to its celebration, I had the privilege of competing in two Olympic Games, I led a National Olympic Committee and now I have the best job in the world, I am the president of the number one Olympic sport,” said Coe, in a press conference.
“I think these combined experiences will be positive for the position but there are other potential candidates with excellent qualifications for that position,” he commented.
