Revolution in English football: one company buys the First and Second Divisions

The company Women’s Professional Leagues Limited (WPLL) has completed the purchase of Women’s Super League and the Women’s Championshipthat is, the first two divisions of English football and promises a revolution in competition.

Among the changes included in this purchase, it is notable that the WPLL is completely independent of the English federation and has total control over the competition, with each of the 23 clubs that make up these divisions having participation in the competition, the Premier League will provide an interest-free loan of 20 million pounds in addition to providing support in broadcasting, commercial and operational aspects.

Despite the FA’s independence, it maintains a “special participation” which allows it to reinvest a portion of revenues into women’s football and women’s football-related projects.

The company, which before the purchase was called NewCo, is led by Nikki Doucet, former director of Nike, and influenced the growth potential that awaits for women’s football.

“We are deeply committed to seizing this moment by creating an environment that prioritizes the welfare and development of female players and creating a community of fans who care about the growth of this sport. ,” Doucet said.

This agreement was reached amid negotiations for a new television rights contract, as the current contract, which is shared between the BBC and Sky Sports, expires in the 2024-2025 season.
