Nico Williams is one of the candidates for Golden Boy 2022, an award designed to recognize the best player under 21 in European football. This prestigious award given by the Italian newspaper Tuttosport has been considered for several years now as the Ballon d’Or for young players on the international scene. The Athletic footballer isn’t the only one from LaLiga appearing in the first selection of applicants.
Pedri, Gavi, Nico, Ansu Fatí and Baldé are the five young players selected at the Barça level. Camavinga, from Real Madrid, Yunus, from Valencia, and Yeremi Pino, from Villarreal, can also be seen on this list along with little Williams. Athletic itself recalled yesterday on its website that “since its first edition, in 2003, players such as Pedri, Haaland, Joao Felix, De Ligt, Mbappé, Martial, Sterling, Pogba, Isco, Götze, Balotelli, Pato, Anderson, Agüero, Cesc, Messi, Rooney or Van der Vaart were named Golden Boy ”.
The rojiblanco winger, at the moment, has entered the list of the 100 most talented players on the scene in Europe. The number of candidates will be reduced from then on each month by a total of 20 units until October 15, where the decision to crown the Golden Boy will fall to 40 international sports media who will decide between 20 young soccer players who will still remain on the list.
