The Spanish tennis player Roberto Bautista He qualified this Monday for the second round of the United States Open after defeating the Italian Luca Nardi 7-5, 7-6 (3) and 7-6 (5).
The Castellón native, number 67 in the ATP ranking, spent three hours and 16 minutes to defeat the Italian, number 90.
Bautista and Nardi played a very even match.
Bautista settled the first set by breaking the Italian’s serve in the final game to put the score at 7-5, but the other two went to a tiebreaker after both players broke each other’s serve.
Bautista was more solvent in the tiebreaks, taking them both and moving on to the second round after a hard-fought battle.
In the second round, Bautista will face the American Ben Shelton (n.13), who defeated Austrian Dominic Thiem (n.210) this Monday in three sets 6-4, 6-2 and 6-2.
Thiem, winner of the 2020 US Open, played his last match in New York as he will retire at the end of the season.
Bautista advanced to the same part of the draw as Serbian Novak Djokovic (n.2).
The man from Castellón knows what it’s like to play in the second round in New York, a tie he has surpassed six times in his career, two of which reached the round of 16.
The US Open, the last ‘grand slam’ of the year, started this Monday in New York and will run until Sunday, September 8.
