Hundreds of migrants attempted to swim to the Spanish exclave of Ceuta on Sunday and Monday morning, with many intercepted in the water and on the beach of Tarajal, a police spokesman said.
The Spanish government representative in Ceuta, Cristina Pérez, said that since Thursday, around 700 people have been intercepted per day. The peak was on Sunday night with around 1,500. There was thick fog those days, starting from the Moroccan coast.
Several videos of the incidents are circulating on social media, for example on Platform X.

Exceptions for minors
“We have this under control with Morocco,” the police spokesman said. People who crossed the border into the port city were consistently arrested and sent back to Morocco. Minors or asylum seekers are excluded.
Spain’s two enclaves on Morocco’s Mediterranean coast, Ceuta and Melilla, are the EU’s only land borders with Africa. Migrants repeatedly try to cross from there into the Union. Two years ago, 23 people died.
Thousands of migrants on Lampedusa
Meanwhile, nearly 1,000 migrants arrived in Lampedusa, Italy, over the weekend via the Mediterranean. Most of the boats left from Tunisia and Libya. Some people had to be taken to hospital.
One group reported being escorted by drone from Libya into international waters. Such an escort service comes at an additional cost compared to what traffickers typically charge for the crossing.
