In Beijing, after a corona outbreak, millions of people have to be tested for the virus in a popular bar: a three-day test campaign started on Monday among the approximately 3.5 million inhabitants of the inner-city district of Chaoyang. Queues over 100 meters long formed at some test stations. Authorities also imposed lockdowns on apartment buildings housing about 10,000 identified contacts of Heaven Supermarket Bar guests.
The pub – a large 24-hour self-service outlet – is known for its reasonably priced spirits and attracts many visitors. The bar and surrounding shops have since been closed off. Like many other restaurants, the “Heaven Supermarket Bar” only reopened last week after the relaxation of the corona measures. Shortly afterwards, the origin of 200 infections was traced to the bar.
The authorities speak of a “wild and explosive” corona outbreak. In 14 of Beijing’s 16 districts, infected people live or work. Anti-covid measures for the 22 million inhabitants of the Chinese capital were lifted a week ago, closing shopping centers, shutting down bus and train lines and asking people to work from home.
