Most veterans will remember the quarterfinal match of the 1996 US Open between Álex Corretja and Pete Sampras. That day, the Barcelona player would make a big splash and dethrone the then king of world tennis.
He managed to force a fifth set tiebreak, a tiebreaker that left us with one of those moments that remains etched in the memory of fans back in The American, obviously tired, hunched over and threw up.
Despite everything, and against all odds, Sampras won that matchwhich gives more epic to the fight.
Well, something similar happened that morning in the starring Argentine duel Tomás Etcheverry and Francisco Cerundolo.
With 4-1 in their favor in the fifth set, Etcheverry was about to score when he was forced to stop the game to throw up.
Fortunately, this did not continue and, after wiping himself with a towel, was able to resume normal play and ended up sealing the victory 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, 1-6 and 6-3 in four hours and four minutes of play.
“At one point (the game) was for him. Honestly, I thought I was lost.. In the fifth set, I fell, (but) I found energy that I haven’t found yet, I went out a little more to put it in,” he said after the victory.
Alexander Zverev (4) awaits him at the next intersection.
