Since August 15, there has been no trace of a man from Frankfurt who left the Friesenberghaus in the Zillertal Alps for a hike to the Hoher Riffler (3231 m). On Tuesday, the Alpine police and mountain rescuers from Ginzling started a new search.
The search team was supported by the Libelle Tirol police helicopter. “We concentrated on the normal route to the Hoher Riffler, because the man walked it with the greatest possible safety,” says Ulli Huber, local branch manager of the Ginzling mountain rescue service.
The crevices and gullies towards Hintertux were also re-examined – in vain.
Under large boulders?
“The man could be lying somewhere meters deep under large boulders. The search is of course very difficult,” says the mountain rescue leader. For the time being, no further searches will probably take place. “We have no official orders.”
Not an isolated case
The German is not the only missing person in the Hinterer Zillertal. “We probably have about eight long-term missing people in the region,” says Huber.
