Fernando Alonso has a tough weekend ahead of him F1 Italian GP 2024. The Spanish driver arrived with lower expectations at Zandvoort, where he expected his car to perform well. Not so at the ‘temple of speed’, where he expected his car to suffer more. At Zandvoort, despite this, he was 10th and scored one point. So it’s clear that repeating it at Monza, “on paper”, is something more complicated.
The Asturian, as always, made sure he would give everything to take advantage of any opportunity, but above all, he emphasized the work he had to do in Free Practice 1. In the end, Aston Martin and Fernando decided not to leave the Asturian’s seat to Felipe Drugovich to drive some Free 1s that the man from Oviedo wants to take advantage of to experiment and “various tests” looking for “long term” to help the team draw key conclusions for the future, especially finding clear answers for creating the car of 2025.
On this track, despite the evolution of some of its rivals in the central zone of the last rounds and despite Fernando’s repeated requests for improvements, Aston Martin does not show new parts in Monza but Alonso assured them they would. “in the next races”perhaps starting from Baku. “We are working on it, without a doubt. We will bring some new pieces, yes,” he said.
“Originally, I was going to give my FP1 to Felipe here at Monza, but then we understood that the resurfacing was a bit bigger than we thought and the corners were different than we thought. So the team changed the plans, and I think it will happen in Mexico”argument.
“On paper, it might not be the best circuit for us, but we still have to try to do our best. PMaybe we’ll try different things in FP1, not specifically for Monza, but also for the team’s long-term projects and to understand the car better.”revealed.
“It will be a very useful weekend, and obviously in qualifying and the race we will do our best. But yes, about Zandvoort, which is a circuit where we had high expectations, we just achieved one point in tenth place, so we’re a bit worried here at Monza. But you know, careers always develop in unexpected ways. It could be a good weekend, although on paper it seems difficult,” he argued.
“For us it is very clear. In Zandvoort we did not lose race speed, that is our race speed and this is our speed in the last five races. We are always at the same distance from the leaders. Everything is measured in percentage , and we are always in the same percentage.
New asphalt and changes to some Monza curves
I think we need a bit of adjustment at Monza, which is a well-known circuit. A new tarmac and new corners will give us some entertainment in FP1, trying to find lines and the use of corners, things like that. This is always a positive thing.
What do you think of Aston Martin’s rivals?
I have not done my calculations and I prefer not to talk about others.
In 2019, Franco Colapinto raced for Alonso’s team in Spanish F4
Yes, that’s how it is. He won many races there. Although I did not personally support, as I was not part of the team that selected the drivers. Obviously I’m happy that one of the drivers racing in my colors won. He was fast in F3, F2, and now he has this opportunity. So I’m happy. All drivers dream of becoming a Formula 1 driver one day. For him, this weekend will be that moment, and I hope he enjoys it.
He did not consider that he supported him directly
Well, it would be unfair to say that I am part of their journey. He was fine without me. The team in Spain supported it, but I wasn’t too involved personally. So apart from me giving color to the team, I can’t say I’ve done much. But, like I said, I hope you enjoy this weekend.
