Not for the first time: Rolex stolen from gym in Vienna worth 8,000 euros

Date:

Once again, a luxury fitness studio in the center of Vienna has become the target of luxury thieves. At least one unknown person is said to have followed an athlete and stolen his expensive Rolex from his locker while he was training. It was not the first time that valuable watches disappeared from the studio.

It has probably already become known among criminals that many businessmen in the center of Vienna use their evenings to go out and train. A circumstance that also cost Viennese Martin F. (name change) an expensive watch. The 35-year-old wants to remain anonymous due to the ongoing investigation into the case.

Mann followed Wiener into the studio unnoticed
He tells the “Krone” that he entered the posh fitness studio shortly after 3 p.m. on August 9. He did not realize at the time that he was being followed directly by a man who may have seen him on the street in front of the studio. When Martin F. went to work out, he put his silver-gold Rolex Datejust (36 mm, two-tone, made in 1997) in the side pocket of his sports bag. He ignored a man who had no sports equipment in the locker room.

Video surveillance shows suspected thief
But it was probably the same man who struck during training and took the Rolex, which was worth 8,000 euros. In any case, video surveillance footage shows him leaving the gym just a few minutes after he entered. The Rolex is now a matter for the police, who do not want to comment for legal reasons and because of ongoing investigations.

Theft “can never be completely ruled out”
In the gym itself, people are naturally remorseful when asked about “Krone”. There are “many people coming and going”, so “appropriate measures are taken to reduce the risk of theft”. However, these risks “can never be completely ruled out”. It cannot be ruled out that professional gangs gain access. It offers its customers the opportunity to store expensive watches and the like separately. Of course, video surveillance of the lockers is not possible.

Suspect provided false membership information
Of course, these measures do not help Martin F. He feels a bit cheated, he says. He was offered three monthly installments as a small compensation. When concluding the contract, he was not informed about the separate storage and the fact that he was not allowed to store valuables in the locker. He also criticizes the fact that the alleged thief has only been a member for 30 days and has cheated the membership with incorrect information.

Watches are a popular stolen item
In any case, it is not the first time that the gym in the city has been targeted by thieves. As reported, one or more perpetrators struck at least ten times between October and December 2022. At that time, magnetic cards were stolen and the lockers were opened. The loot: In addition to winter coats, laptops, headphones, debit cards and smartphones, also a Rolex Explorer 2 (10,000 euros) and an Omega Seamaster 300 (value: 13,000 euros).
