At least 60 people have died when a suspension bridge over a river collapsed in the Indian state of Gujarat, in the west of the country, the state minister for Housing and Rural Development, Brijesh Merja, confirmed to the Times of India.
Over the Machchhu River, the Morbi Suspension Bridge was a historic structure that was restored and reopened to the public just four days ago for the New Year celebrations in Gujarati. Rajkot city deputy Mohan Kundariya estimates the number of injured at around 100, although this number could not be verified.
According to media witnesses, some 500 people, including women and children, were crossing the bridge when it collapsed. According to the same sources, dozens of people have been submerged and several more may be trapped under the rubble.
