Argentina, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay made official on Thursday their project of hosting the 2030 World Cup, an edition that will mark the centenary of the first final stage of the tournament, to be held in Uruguay.
The joint candidacy in South America will compete for the organization of the 2030 World Cup where Spain and Portugal will also jointly present.
“Today we have made a decision in politics and sports to re -launch the possibility of holding the 2030 World Cup in South America, and in these four countries,” Paraguayan Vice President Hugo Velázquez confirmed at a press conference.
Sports ministers and representatives of the four embassies met on Thursday in Asunción and raised the intention to FIFA.
Velázquez clarified that the South American candidates did not have the financial resources to compete “with the great powers of the world” and therefore planned a World Cup “in a strict manner.”
The centenary of the first World Cup
“We’re going back to the history of world football that the first World Cup was in South America,” he said, referring to the competition held in Uruguay in 1930.
He also said that South America is the continent that “most exports the best players in the world.”
The financing of works
However, the four countries in South America need to establish infrastructure works.
“We also had the presence of a representative of the CAF (Development Bank of Latin America), who offered to establish the possibility that they would spend on these infrastructure works to be shown in different countries,” Velázquez announced. .
He stressed that these investments will continue to “generate well-being” in their respective countries.
The next step for the bloc is a meeting that will take place “less than a month” in Montevideo.
“After the work table I think they will establish some kind of calendar to be carried out,” Paraguay’s second-in-command said.
Four countries have never organized a World Cup
If the conformation is confirmed, it will be the first time that the four countries in the region will jointly host the World Cup.
The last time the world cup was played on the continent was in Brazil in 2014, where the German team became champions.
This year the competition will be held in Qatar, and in 2026, in Canada, the United States and Mexico.
