Aleix García is one of the players with the most minutes on the pitch in the Girona squad and a key player in Míchel’s engine room. Three days before the playoff final, he attended the MD to discuss the most important game of the year.
There are only three days left for the second leg of the final and to find out the fate of Girona. What is the atmosphere in the locker room?
The atmosphere is very positive and the dressing room is very cohesive in a time like this. We took advantage of the week to regain our strength and rest a bit, as most football players came fairly. I think it’s a moment where the mental and the tactical are on top and this week the coach is emphasizing it. We feel an illusion and desire for game time to come.
Discuss the physical state of the team. Do they come in strength?
Until we’re late, but it’s the last 90 minutes and we have to give it our all. It doesn’t matter that we are in June and the end of the season because I have no doubt that when the game starts we will be fresh and ready.
The physical can be important, but in a situation like this … How does it affect the mental aspect?
This is going to be very important, we know. I think it was more than physical, as happened on the day of Ipurúa against Eibar. It’s a matter of thinking that this is the last effort of the season and the last step to achieve the goal.
The coach insisted that the mental aspect has been labored over throughout the year. Did they do anything special before the final?
I think not, I don’t know what they’ve done in the last two seasons, but the week is normal, working on what we should do over the weekend. We had a barbecue on Wednesday to create a nice atmosphere with the squad, but more than that we were doing what we always do.
At the football level, what should Girona do to beat a Tenerife whose style is different from yours?
This includes doing the same approach we did on Saturday and we do throughout the season. In the first leg we were superior, but we didn’t score any goals and the main thing we needed to improve was the issue of effectiveness. It was nice to come and initially we had to get 0-1, as in Eibar.
Girona’s approach seems clear. What do you expect from Tenerife and the odds in general? Will it change compared to the first leg?
We will try to be the hero, have the ball and find the rival goal to hurt them. The reality of playing outside and in front of so many people in our game will not influence us. There will be times when we will have to suffer because they will want to have a leading role and that is when we must be more together. Our forwards will surely give everything to score and we, from the back, will help them to make it easier for them.
Finally, all playoff goals are from set pieces. You are responsible for Girona. What is its significance to the outcome?
It’s a fact that we’re one of the teams that generates the most risk from set pieces and we know this is one of our strengths. They have footballers who run well at the top and we need to be vigilant, but I am confident that Stuani, Bernardo, Bueno and Juanpe, among others, can take advantage of the opportunities we have created.
