Olympian, Cheptegei, attacked and admitted to having burns on 75% of his body

The Ugandan athlete Rebecca Cheptegeiwho participated in the past Olympic Games in Paris at 10,000 meters, was admitted this Monday to a hospital in Kenya with multiple burns after an alleged attack by her boyfriend, Police report.

The event took place in Trans Nzoia county, in western Kenya, where the athlete was rushed to Moi University and Referral Hospital in the western city of Eldoret due to the severity of his injuries.

Trans Nzoia County Police Commander Jeremiah Ole Kosiom confirmed the incident and said the athlete suffered burns on 75 percent of his body, local newspaper The Star reported.

Cheptegei, 33, was allegedly attacked by her boyfriend, who doused her with gasoline and set her on fire.

The alleged attacker also suffered serious burns and is in the same hospital, according to the aforementioned source.

The athlete’s parents, Joseph Cheptegei and Agnes Ndiema, said he was initially admitted to the Level Four Hospital in Kitale, the capital of Trans Nzoia, but was referred to the Eldoret centre.

The parents, who traveled to Trans Nzoia to find out about the attack, indicated that their daughter, who lives in Uganda, bought land in the Kenyan county and built a house where she stayed during of his training.
