The Spanish midfielder Juan Mata2010 World Cup winner, has revealed that he is enjoying his long-awaited return to the field of play with Western Sydney Wanderers after arriving in Australia to join the A-League club. The Manchester United and Chelsea player has signed a one-year contract with Wanderer, who is coached by Alen Stajcic, and is only thinking about playing regularly after playing just 10 minutes at Japanese side Vissel Kobe last season.

“I’m really looking forward to being on the field,” the 36-year-old told Australian media. “I told the coach that I really want to touch the ball again, to train with my new teammates, I feel good and I’m confident that this will be a good season. I just want to enjoy football. I want to give my best Everyday in training, I want to bring a high level, professionalism, all my experience and knowledge of the game and, of course, I want to bring good football.”

Mata joins a Wanderers team that is among the top-placed in the A-League but has struggled to convert that support into titles in recent campaigns. Wanderers won the A-League Premiership in their debut season in 2013 and claimed the Asian Champions League title a year later, but have struggled since then, finishing seventh in the domestic competition last season.

However, a decade without success has not dampened the enthusiasm of the fans and dozens of them, dressed in red and black, flocked to Sydney Airport on Saturday to greet an Eye who hopes to make his debut against the bitter home rivals of the Wanderers, Sydney FC, on the opening day of the A-League in October. “I saw the fans this morning and I can’t wait for them to celebrate something, hopefully in the first game of the season, which I know is important.”
