Revolution in Spain to close the Davis Cup: Alcaraz and Bautista, against Australia

Date:

By Carlos Alcaraz or Roberto Bautista. David Ferrer has decided to completely change the team that will face Australia on the final day of the Davis Cup group stage.

Finally, Pablo Carreño and Pedro Martínez will play individual matches. The Asturian opens at 11am, taking on Jordan Thompson, while Martínez next faces Alexei Popyrin.

For doubles, Marcel Granollers and Pablo Carreño are scheduled to take the court, although changes can be made up to a few minutes before.

With the classification already sealed, David Ferrer preferred to rest the two players who carried the weight throughout the week.

Although finishing first would guarantee failure in the Final Eight in Malaga and face the second in the group in the quarterfinals, the Spanish team does not attach too much importance to this factor, as Alcaraz said on Friday like Ferrer.

So, the Murcian tennis player assured that “for me the goal is to qualify, Maybe it’s better to be first than second, but with the team we have, I don’t care if I’m first than second in the group.”.

Other countries should be afraid of us“Maybe on Sunday the players who don’t have the option to play can come in and show why they are in the Spanish team,” added the two-time Wimbledon champion.

What Ferrer agreed with his player was to minimize the importance of finishing first or second, although he admitted that “I always prefer to finish first, but for the sake of winning. In this format, it doesn’t matter to be first or second because the teams that finish second, change players in the finals and you never know what is best“.

And in this group phase played in four venues, they were absent, for various reasons, players of the caliber of the Italians Jannik Sinner and Lorenzo Musetti, the Americans Taylor Fritz, Tommy Paul and Frances Tiafoe, the German Alexander Zverev or the Australian Alex Miñaur, who may attend the Final Phase of the tournament.

If Spain top the group, Second place in Group A will be measured in the quarterfinals in Malagawhich will probably be Belgium if the Netherlands can’t surprise champions Italy; or the second classified in Group C, Germany.

If, on the other hand, it finishes second, its potential rivals are Italy, if it is confirmed as first in its group, and the United States.
