Masarova’s return to Thailand

The Spanish Rebecca Masarovanumber 119 in the WTA ranking, came back from a set down on Tuesday at the WTA tournament in Hua Hin II (Thailand) and defeated the Hungarian Anna Bondar by 3-6, 7-6(2) and 7-5 to access the round of 16.

The match, which was settled in three hours and three minutes, featured a break of the Hungarian’s serve in the fourth game that was enough to win the set.

In the second, there were up to four breaks, two by each player, to send the set to a tie-break, where the Spanish player showed himself to be more solid to send the match to the third set.

The Spaniard started as a shot in the arm as he scored in the first four games, but Bondar managed to level the contest (5-5). At that moment, Masarova reacted and won two straight games to take the match 7-5.

In the round of 16, the Spanish will face the winner of the rivalry between the Chinese Xinyu Wang, third seed in the tournament, and the Egyptian Mayor Sheriff (93).

In other matches of the day, Japan’s Mai Hontama (130) sprung a surprise by defeating Ukrainian Dayana Yastremska, the first seed of the tournament, by 7-6 (4) and 7-5, and Croatian Jana Fett (129). ) defeated Chinese Saisai Zheng (1024) 6-2, 3-6 and 3-6.
