The Tunisian Ons Jabeur achieved in berlin the third title of his career, the second of the year after the WTA 1000 in Madrid, after the departure of the Swiss Belinda Bencic was injured on the left ankle (6-3 and 2-1).
The final took only 51 minutes on the grass in Berlin. In the latter part of the first set, the Olympic champion slipped and fell to the ground. His left foot was injured and treated by a track doctor. He returned to the field. He lost the first set and after giving up his serve in the third game of the second he went into the net and shook hands with Jabeur to take the win.
The Tunisian’s first victory on the grass lifted her to third place in the women’s rankings where the Spanish fell Paula Badosa, which will be fourth on Monday. The Greek Maria Sakkari is now fifth.
Jabeur enjoyed his great time. In addition to reaching the top position in his career in the world rankings, he already had two victories in 2022. He hadn’t played on the lawn this season until he reached Berlin, a tournament that Bencic declined.
The Swiss, Olympic champion and aspiring seventh trophy in its history, the second in the current year after Charleston, was already a finalist in the same stage in 2021 but was overtaken by Russian Liiudmila Samsonova.
A quarter-finalist last week in Den Bosch and a finalist today in Berlin, the Swiss did not want to risk his injured ankle near the start of Wimbledon.
