South American: Romero scores, Depay assists and Corinthians, in the semifinals

Date:

Corinthianswhich is fighting to avoid being tied to the second division in Brazil, qualified this Tuesday for the semifinals of South American Cupafter being liquidated Strength3-0, with a goal from Paraguayan Ángel Romero and an assist from Dutchman Memphis Depay.

The team led by Argentine Ramón Díaz completed the process with flying colors, extending the victory they achieved in the first leg (0-2) and will now fight for the ticket to the final against the winner of the tie between Racing Club and Athletico Paranaense.

Romero, in an individual game, and Igor Coronado, after catching a rebound from João Ricardo from the Paraguayan’s shot, sealed the deal at the Neo Química Arena, with two goals at the start of the second half. Pedro Henrique completed the rout with a pass from Depay in the 82nd minute as Corinthians had done their homework as the Dutch international, a new signing for the final stretch of the season, came off the bench.

The São Paulo team started with the Venezuelan José Martínez and the Peruvian André Carrillo. The two midfielders gave strength to the team, which seemed to leave doubts at the beginning of the season. In contrast to Fortaleza, who are having a very long campaign after a memorable start.

The home team managed to surrender the tie in the first half in a head-to-head battle that Coronado couldn’t finish. In front, the team of Argentine coach Juan Pablo Vojvoda was uncomfortable and dissolved in the midfield. With no intensity, it barely bothered Hugo Souza’s goal. Only José Welison tested the Brazil goalkeeper from the corner of the area.

Vojvoda didn’t wait a minute and at half-time he made three substitutions in a flash. And there was a reaction. One of the new players, Breno Lopes, made a powerful shot from outside the area that put Souza in serious trouble.

The goalkeeper also had to leave the area to cut off Lopes’ own counterattack. Although the clearest came from Kayzer, who inexplicably missed Marinho’s cross in the small area. And when Fortaleza started to dream, two blows came from the Corinthian team.

First, Romero controlled Yuri Alberto’s change of direction, cut through Felipe Jonatan and shot with his left foot in the 55th minute. And second, just four minutes later, Coronado grabbed a rebound from João Ricardo, then another good shot by Romero.

With the classification in their pocket, the home fans enjoyed Depay in the last half hour. The former Barcelona and Atlético de Madrid player pressed, claimed the ball and assisted Pedro Henrique’s final goal. Good evening for a Corinthian who keeps trading.
