Jessica Pegula debuts with victory at the WTA 1000 China Open, beating Diane Parry 6-1 7-6(4) for one hour and 33 minutes on the center court of the Beijing tennis complex.
The American, who fought off the Frenchwoman’s push in the second set, managed to advance to the third round of the tournament held in Beijing.
The second seed of the tournament showed more efficiency from the first set, where he took advantage of his serve and precision on long points.
Parry, although spirited, could only take one game in the first set, succumbing to the American’s effectiveness on his first serve.
The second set was much closer, with only one break per side before it was decided in a tie break.
Pegula showed composure and poise at key moments to close the match in two sets and leave Parry, playing in his second appearance in Beijing, with no options.
With this success, Pegulawho will face Russian Veronika Kudermetova (n.23) in the third round, he and Paula Badosa will cross paths in the round of 16.
Pegula is the first of the top seeds to qualify for the third round, while other favorites such as Russian Aryna Sabalenka, Italian Jasmine Paolini, American Coco Gauff and local Zheng Qinwen are looking to secure their place.
