Karen Khachanov advanced to the quarterfinals of the China Open after defeating Argentine Francisco Cerúndolo this Sunday by a tight 7-6(4) and 7-6(9) in a very close match decided in two tiebreakers, at the Lotus secondary court of the Beijing tennis complex.
The Russian (n.27) took advantage of key moments in a tense match where Cerúndolo (n.31) showed stability in service and leveled the score on several occasions.
however, Khachanov was more effective in the deciding points, taking both tie breaks to ensure you pass to the next stage.
The first set was one of constant exchange, with an initial break by Khachanov for 3-2, followed by a quick recovery by Cerúndolo, but the Russian won the tiebreaker 7-4, taking advantage of his chances.
In the second set, both held their serves until 5-5.at that point Cerúndolo broke for 5-6 and had three set points, but Khachanov defended himself, recovered the break and took the tie break 11-9.
Khachanov the winner of the duel between second seed Carlos Alcaraz will face in the quarterfinalsand the Dutch Tallon Griekspoor (n.39).
Along with Khachanov, the reigning champion and number one in the ATP ranking, the Italian Jannik Sinner, and the Russian Daniil Medvedev await the next round, while his compatriot Andrey Rublev seeks to reach the quarterfinals against to the Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina (no. 64).
