Aliou Cissé He stepped down as coach of Senegal today following instructions from the country’s government, unhappy with its latest results and growing unpopularity.
Cissé, 48, took over in March 2015 and led the Teranga Lions win the Africa Cup for the first time in its history in 2021 (it was played in 2022 due to the Covid pandemic) after finishing runner-up in 2019.
In its statement, the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) detailed that it received a letter from the Minister of Sports, Khady Diene Gaye, did not approve the renewal of Aliou Cissé, whose contract expired on August 31.
Objectives not achieved
The minister argued Aliou Cissé’s failure to achieve goals assigned to him: won the last African Cup (Senegal lost in the round of 16 on penalties against the host and subsequent champions Côte d’Ivoire) and reached the quarterfinals of the 2022 World Cup (they also lost in the round of 16 against England), as well as the lowering of the national team in the FIFA ranking.
The acting minister since April also denounced “the danger of animosity between our national team and the Senegalese,” reports the FSF.
Apart from the Africa Cup won in 2021, Aliou Cissé has qualified Senegal for the last two World Cups, in 2018 and 2022, after not participating in the tournament since 2002.
But he has been criticized since early elimination in the round of 16 of the last African Cup. Criticism intensified on social networks after the 1-1 draw in Dakar against Burkina Faso in September at the start of the qualification phase for the 2025 Africa Cup, although a few days later they beat Burundi (0-1) .
