The team Movistar team announced this Thursday the signing of Natnael Tesfatsion. Born in Asmara (Eritrea) in 1999, he will be the first African in the history of the squad led by Eusebio Unzué in almost five decades of history.
With two seasons of WorldTour experience, Testafsion will come to Movistar in 2025 to add the team’s thirty-first nationality. Arrived from Lidl-Trek.
“I had the opportunity to get to know the team better this year in Australia during the Tour Down Under and they left a very good impression on me”explained Tesfatsion, who competed last Sunday at the road World Championships in Zürich. “They are a strong team, with a great atmosphere, and I want to contribute my effort and continue to improve the results. I consider myself a cyclist with power for short climbs and a good top speed, and I want to continue exploiting those characteristics. Hopefully next year I will achieve my first victory in the WorldTour; This year I came close, when I was 2nd in the Cadel Evans Road Race, so I hope I can repay the trust that the Movistar Team is giving me with a good result.”
Outstanding in his time as a sub23, he achieved encouraging results for the structures of Qhubeka (2019-20) and Androni (2021-22), such as two generals in the Tour of Rwanda or podiums in the Italian Adriatica Ionica Race and Giro dell’ Appennino. In his adaptation to the WorldTour he was, in addition to second in the Geelong classic, 3rd last year – after Alaphilippe and Carapaz – in a stage of the Critérium du Dauphiné. He is the current national champion of Eritrea, a flag he will display next to the ‘M’ on his chest in 2025.
