Tottenham won again on the second day of the Europa League, but were unable to beat a Ferencvaros who suggested more and ended up deserving of a draw (0-1).
Postecoglou’s team started as clear favorites, deciding to make important rounds, although they could not justify the poor play seen on the grass. Players like Bentancur, Kulusevski, Maddison and Van de Ven started on the bench to breathe, more focused on the Premier League, and the presence of some young players leveled the match more than desired.
Tottenham had a good first few minutes and quickly found the advantage. Matar Sarr found himself with a loose ball in the mouth of goalkeeper Dibusz who converted (23′) and this was the beginning of the Englishmen’s agreement, who committed themselves to passing the game that have little ambition. Ferenvaros deserved better from the start and did not collapse even though Varga had a goal disallowed for millimetric offside moments before Spurs took the lead.
It was more advantageous in the second half. Indeed, this forced Postecoglu to remove his best players from the bench, but Maddison or Kulusevski could do little to change the dynamic. Ferencvaros’ worst friend has no doubts about his lack of punch. The crossed shots that didn’t hit the goal and the ones that did, went straight into Vicario’s hands. The passing minutes made the locals give it their all, let the rearguard down and paid for it. Brenan Johnson, coming off the bench, scored the second goal (86′).
It should be the silence, but Ferencvaros still has something to say. Particularly Varga, who took a cross from Ramírez and beat Vicario to put the tension in the final minutes (90′). But the little time left played in favor of ‘Spurs’, who maintained their advantage and took the victory.
