The Monumental stadium of the Buenos Aires club River Plate will be the venue, on November 30, for the final of the Copa Libertadores, the South American Football Confederation (Conmebol) announced this Friday.
“The decisive match for Eternal Glory will be played on Saturday, November 30, 2024, in one of the most emblematic settings in South American football,” announced Conmebol, which has its headquarters in the Paraguayan city of Luque, in a statement.
Monumental, the note added, “was chosen for its modern infrastructure, its extensive sporting history and its ability to accommodate a large number of fans that include the current semi-finalist clubs.”
The Buenos Aires venue has a capacity for more than 84,000 spectators.
Last February it was announced that the capital of Argentina will host the final of the South American tournament, which had its first edition in 1960, under the name Copa de Campeones de América.
Among the possible scenarios, in addition to the Monumental, the Libertadores de América Stadium of Club Atlético Independiente and the Diego Armando Maradona Único Stadium are being considered.
Since 2019, the year in which the title of South America’s highest club competition was played in a single match, Argentina has not hosted a final.
The last definition of the Libertadores that must be traced back to the land of Buenos Aires is the failed 2018 involving eternal rivals, River Plate and Boca Juniors, and the return has to be resolved in Madrid.
The first leg had to be played a day later than planned due to a flood at the La Bombonera facilities, the Boca Juniors field, and the second leg was moved to Europe after River fans attacked the Auriazules’ car. near Nunez stadium.
Since then, Conmebol has awarded the organization of the Libertadores final in Lima, Rio de Janeiro (twice), Montevideo and Guayaquil (Ecuador).
With 25 titles, Argentina is the country that has won the most Cups, followed by Brazil (23) and Uruguay (8).
