Brighton returned to their winning ways with a huge comeback against a Tottenham team that lost the second half after going into half-time with the score at 0-2 thanks to goals from Brennan Johnson and Maddison. Las Gaviotas’ reaction was imperial after the restart and they managed to turn around the poor result with goals from Minteh, Rütter and Welbeck in 16 brilliant minutes.
Ante Postecoglou’s side had a good start to the game, playing in the opposite half, pressing the ball and taking advantage of spaces with Solanke, Brennan Johnson and Timo Werner, assisted by Maddison. The German striker scored in the 21st minute but the goal was disallowed for offside but, just two minutes later, Brennan Johnson opened the scoring after a good pass from Solanke.
Brighton tried to react with the help of Mitoma but Tottenham, destroying the counterattack, extended their advantage with a good combination between Porro, Solanke and Werner that ended with Maddison in collaboration with goalkeeper Verbruggen, who could have done more to avoid 0-2.
At half-time, Hürzeler made a move, bringing on Pervis Estupiñán to provide depth on the left wing and the home team’s reaction was immediate. Estupiñán played in Mitoma and the Japanese, from the left, put in a cross that Udogie couldn’t clear well. The Italian full-back left the ball dead inside his area for Minteh to get his team fully into the game (48′).
Postecoglou’s team, so serious until then, went unforgivably down 1-2 and Brighton smelled blood and did not let their prey escape. The Ecuadorian full-back found Mitoma again and the Japanese assisted Rutter so that he, after a great maneuver, tied the score (58′).
In full flood and with Tottenham on the canvas, Brighton completed the express comeback thanks to an act of faith from Rütter, who fought through a complex ball and, dropping himself to the ground, placed the free ball for Welbeck’s header goal (66′).
Jubilation was in the air at Brighton stadium and Tottenham were unable to react with more than 25 minutes remaining to sort out the mess. The Spur coach changes had no effect and Brighton had no trouble holding on to the result and winning again after four games without a win.
