Barcelona has opened the door to hosting the Summer Olympic Games starting in 2036

Date:

He The Councilor for Sports of the Barcelona City Council, David Escudé, ruled this Tuesday the Catalan capital will host the Basketball Euroleague Final Four in 2025but he stressed his intention to accept the final of the 2030 soccer world cup and opened the door to organizing the Olympic Games starting in 2036.

“The Olympic flame is always lit. An intangible part of the Olympic Games is the sense of pride in the city. We’re always open, in 2036, 2040 or 2044.”assured Escudé from the Employment Promotion headquarters in Barcelona.

Within the framework of the ‘Make Metropolis, Barcelona 2030’ conference cycle, the councilor participated in a dialogue with the president of the Union of Sports Federations of Catalonia (UFEC), Gerard Esteva, who also positioned himself in favor of a hypothetical candidacy. ““We would love it if, in the year 36, Barcelona chose to be an Olympic candidate again, and we will work hard for it.”he assured.

On the other hand, Escudé confirmed that the Catalan capital has not withdrawn its candidacy to host the Euroleague Final Four in 2025that the venue is still unknown, but stressed that it is “illogical” to fix it with a few months to go, and admitted that they do not close the door to the competition “in the future”, although “without entering the auctions”.

Also, the councilor reiterated that Barcelona will try to host the 2030 World Cup final, and in relation to the works of Spotify Camp Nou he responded that he did not feel that Barça “rushed” the City Council.

“In any case, the club is the one doing the work. Licenses run at the speed of any job and things are done smoothly. We will go together,” he said.

Escudé assured that he was not aware of any request from Barça to play a Euroleague match at the Palau Sant Jordi, and claimed the Copa del América as an event that “brought sailing sports into the homes” of the people of Barcelona.

Along the same line, Esteva, who quantified the direct economic impact of sports entities and companies in Barcelona at 2.5 billion euros, highlighted the “perceived economic and social heritage” and “the urban transformation” caused by the Copa del América capital.

Both agreed to teach the America’s Cup work to promote maritime sports and pointed to the “saturation of sports facilities” as a problem in the city.

In this sense, Esteva promoted the coverage of the rounds and enable the Parc del Fòrum for regular sports training, while Escudé pointed out the need to renew the facilities built in 1992 and defended the construction of new facilities in the metropolitan area and in the basement of the city, as will happen in a pavilion in the Glòries area.
