Jack Grealish disagreed with the former coach’s decision England Gareth Southgate to exclude him from your team for European Cupbut the winger said he was grateful to interim coach Lee Carsley for believing in him. Grealish, 29, was one of the big names left out of the squad for Germany, where England lost to Spain 2-1 in the final.
Manchester United centre-back Harry Maguire, Tottenham Hotspur midfielder James Maddison and Everton centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite are the other notable absences. Grealish, capped 38 times by England, scored three goals in 20 appearances for Manchester City in the Premier League last season.
“I’ll be honest with you: I didn’t really agree with that,” Grealish told BBC Radio 5 Live on Tuesday. “It takes a bit of balance in every position on the field and I consider myself a pretty experienced player now. I’ve won a lot of things now so you asked me if I should leave, yes I still think I should but it’s obvious it wasn’t meant to be that way.”
Grealish received a call-up when Carsley, named interim manager following Southgate’s resignation after the Euros, named him in his first team in August. “I’m grateful to manager Lee Carsley for giving me that opportunity and for trusting me. It obviously means a lot. I think throughout my career, when I’ve played under coaches who have shown confidence in me and talked to me the way they did the last two camps, it really helps me.
